Myrtha Hurtado Rivas

Global Head, Trademarks, Domain Names and Copyright at Novartis International AG

Myrtha Hurtado Rivas joined Novartis International AG in 2016 to lead the trademark, domain name and copyright departments across all Novartis divisions globally (Sandoz, Alcon, Novartis Pharma and Novartis Oncology). Her breadth of IP experience comes from an extensive and diverse education, time spent at the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property in Bern, almost five years at Sandoz and five years at Novartis Pharma. Ms Hurtado Rivas has particular expertise in trademark, design, copyright, anti-counterfeiting and domain name law, international business law and the pharmaceutical industry (including defence and enforcement in these areas).

In 2014 Managing Intellectual Property awarded Ms Hurtado Rivas the Managing IP In-House Award and the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna inducted her into the Alumni Hall of Fame. In 2017 the World Trademark Review Industry Awards recognised Novartis as team of the year in the healthcare and life sciences category, while in 2018 Sandoz received the same award.

Ms Hurtado Rivas has an executive master of European and international business law HSG from the University of St Gallen, a master in advanced international studies from the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna and the University of Vienna and a bilingual law degree from the University of Fribourg. She speaks fluent German, French, English, Italian and Spanish, meaning that her capacity to understand the nuances of global business is a great asset for Novartis. Her current appointment has provided her with the opportunity to oversee the trademark portfolio of one of the pharmaceutical industry’s leading players and contributes to policymaking.

Ms Hurtado Rivas’s Peruvian heritage provides a final layer to an IP professional who truly encapsulates what it means to be a global citizen.
