Head of Legal at Superdry plc
James Sweeting heads the legal team at fashion brand and retailer Superdry.
Based in the United Kingdom, Superdry has grown rapidly in recent years. It now has around 600 stores in over 50 countries and sells its products globally. Its designers produce thousands of new designs for clothing products, accessories and trims every year.
Mr Sweeting’s team is charged with supporting every aspect of Superdry's global operations. A significant part of this involves safeguarding and monetising Superdry's IP rights around the world. His team deals with IP litigation, brand protection, registry proceedings, prosecutions and brand and design clearance and works closely with the business to manage supply chain issues, licensing, franchising, distribution and marketing initiatives.
Before joining Superdry in 2016, Mr Sweeting worked as an IP litigator at Pinsent Masons and then Lewis Silkin in London. During his time in private practice, Mr Sweeting worked alongside numerous brands and household names on their IP protection, clearance and enforcement strategies. He was involved in several high-profile trademark cases concerning issues such as genuine use, comparative advertising and Google AdWords. His cases saw him represent businesses and brands in a range of sectors in most major forums in the United Kingdom and Europe.
