Global Head, Intellectual Property at Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, SA
Irene Rodríguez Alonso joined the global financial group Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), which provides services to 72 million customers in more than 30 countries, in 2011. She heads the in-house legal team that manages trademark, domain name, copyright, trade secret and patent global portfolios across BBVA's group companies. Besides this, Ms Rodríguez Alonso serves as the legal manager of the in-house global patent office, which works to protect and manage inventions across the group. She has extensive experience in all matters relating to the maintenance of domain name portfolios and monitoring the online space, as well as the prosecution and enforcement of valuable trademarks. Ms Rodríguez Alonso has been involved in handling proceedings internationally in multi-jurisdictional trademark clearance and portfolio management matters, as well as advising on complex cross-border IP conflicts in most jurisdictions where BBVA has a presence, including on the protection and enforcement of technically complex non-traditional marks, contractual relationships and IP-related matters with partners, providers and joint ventures. Over the years, by working closely with BBVA’s other business areas, Ms Rodríguez Alonso has encouraged collaboration to benefit the bank as a whole. She also played a key role in breaking down barriers between the legal team and other business areas and has been instrumental in encouraging a better overall understanding of the business’s needs.
Ms Rodríguez Alonso appears on The Legal 500 GC Powerlist Iberia 2018 and 2019 and was named a corporate IP star in 2015 and 2016. She is a member of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property and the Licensing Executives Society. Ms Rodríguez Alonso studied law at the Comillas Pontifical University and has an LLM from IE Business School. Before joining BBVA, she worked as an IP attorney in well-known law firms Uría Menéndez and Hogan Lovells.
