Senior Associate General Counsel, Intellectual Property at Gilead Sciences Inc

Gretchen Stroud joined Gilead Sciences Inc in 2008 and manages Gilead’s trademark and brand protection department. Ms Stroud and her team are responsible for all aspects of naming at Gilead, as well as clearing, registering, enforcing and defending its many trademarks and copyrights worldwide. Together with her expertise in trademark prosecution, Ms Stroud also advises Gilead's regulatory team on the approval of pharmaceutical brand names by local government health agencies, as well as the development and assignment of international non-proprietary names to Gilead's compounds. Further, Ms Stroud and her team are responsible for clearing and protecting product designs, packaging and labelling.

Ms Stroud and the trademark team manage the company’s online and domain name enforcement efforts, including many successful Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy actions. Ms Stroud’s team is also responsible for coordinating the company’s brand protection efforts and assisting in developing an appropriate response to the illicit sale of pharmaceuticals online. Ms Stroud advises on trademark aspects of transactions, including trademark due diligence, assignments and licences.

Before joining Gilead, Ms Stroud practised at the Cooley law firm. She has a bachelor’s in English (with high honours) from the University of Southern California and a JD from Stanford Law School.
