Emma Stopford is senior counsel, trademarks at British American Tobacco (BAT), a leading international FTSE 100 company. She is an IP lawyer and UK chartered trademark attorney with 20 years’ experience in fast-moving consumer-goods businesses. A strategic and clear thinker who thrives on the challenge of complex international projects, she is known to be an engaging communicator, building the trust and confidence of key stakeholders, colleagues and clients. Her aim is to create effective partnerships at all levels to deliver first-class legal trademark support to the business.

Ms Stopford currently leads a team looking after a large global portfolio of trademarks for local and regional BAT brands and supporting mergers and acquisitions, licensing and trademark projects. Before joining BAT she spent 14 years at GSK as the vice president consumer healthcare trademarks. In this role, she led the transnational legal team responsible for the substantial global portfolio of GSK consumer healthcare trademarks. 

During her career, Ms Stopford has gained strong experience of all aspects of managing a dynamic portfolio of trademarks, international disputes and major M&A and licensing projects. Over the years she has worked in London and Asia and undertaken a broad range of IP matters from anti-counterfeiting initiatives to supporting multi-million-dollar transactions and everything in between.

Ms Stopford actively participates in European and international trademark organisations and is often invited to speak at conferences on topical trade mark issues.
