Ying Zhang has been practising IP law since 1997 and is one of the first lawyers to have represented clients before the Chinese IP tribunals after China acceded to the World Trade Organisation in 2001. Ms Zhang’s practice covers most aspects of IP rights, both contentious and non-contentious.
Ms Zhang was a legal clerk in Chinese courts for two years before she joined the Beijing office of a major UK IP consulting company, where she started her IP practice. She gained substantial experience in IP portfolio management and complex IP litigations for dozens of multinational companies, including Gap, Kellogg, Roche and Bayer, from 2001 to 2007. In March 2007 Ms Zhang was invited to join a Magic Circle firm where she got involved in dozens of business transactions in respect of IP assets, IP prosecution and enforcement matters, and commercial litigation and arbitration for international companies. Ms Zhang subsequently joined Jincheng Tongda & Neal, a full-service Chinese law firm established in 1992 with 14 offices across China; there she continues to represent clients before the Chinese courts and the China National Intellectual Property Administration. Several of her cases have been selected as representative cases by the Supreme Court. Ms Zhang was nominated among the 15 best IP lawyers by Asian Legal Business in 2016 and 2020.
Ms Zhang is a former vice director of the Trademark Law Committee of the Beijing Lawyers Association (BLA) and is the vice director of the BLA E-commerce Law Committee. She also serves on the INTA Data Protection Committee. From 2014 to 2015, Ms Zhang studied law in the United States, focusing on US copyright law, patent law, trademark law, trade secret law, technology and patent licensing.
