Valborg Kjartansdóttir graduated as a lawyer from the University of Iceland in 1984. The following year she began working at Sigurjónsson & Thor, becoming a partner in 1989. She is a member of the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, the European Communities Trademark Association, the International Trademark Association and the Icelandic Bar Association and is an overseas member of the Institute of Trademark Attorneys and the Licensing Executives Society. She served on the board of the Association of Icelandic Trademark and Patent Agents as treasurer from 1989 to 1999 and from 2001 to 2002, and as chair from 2002 to 2007. Ms Kjartansdóttir is a European patent attorney and has frequently commented on changes in the law and regulations relating to intellectual property.
Ms Kjartansdóttir has lectured on trademark law at the University of Iceland, has published a current intelligence article in the Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice and since 2013 has been a contributor to the WTR Daily regarding administrative and court decisions in Iceland. Ms Kjartansdóttir was named an IP Star by Managing Intellectual Property in 2017 and was included in the IP Stars Top 250 Women in IP 2017. The list recognises female IP practitioners in private practice who have performed exceptionally for their clients and firms in the last year. Ms Kjartansdóttir was invited to publish her profile under the Women in Law section of the Chambers and Partners website in 2012. She has been working for IP rights holders since 1985, advising clients in various industries on the enforcement of trademark rights, infringements, ownership and disputes before the courts and authorities.
