Steve Zhao is a partner at the Beijing office of AnJie Law Firm. He is a top trademark litigator in China with 14 years of experience. His expertise covers major and complex trademark administrative litigation and civil infringement disputes, copyright infringement litigation, unfair competition lawsuits, IP-related arbitration and trade secret infringement litigation.
Mr Zhao has handled many influential cases which have been selected as typical cases by courts and administrative authorities. One of the highest-profile IP cases that he has handled was a civil infringement case between Michael Jordan and Qiaodan Sports in 2012. In 2013 he represented BMW to secure compensation of Rmb2 million in a trademark infringement and unfair competition case. This case was selected as a top eight IP case by the Supreme People’s Court and as a top 10 IP case by both the Beijing High People’s Court and the Quality Brands Protection Committee. He represented Ferrero to file an administrative complaint against a domestic chocolate brand for three-dimensional trademark infringement, which was selected as a classic case by the State Administration of Industry and Commerce in 2014. Recently, Mr Zhao won a trademark infringement and unfair competition case for the National Basketball Association, in which merchandising rights were adopted for the first time in a civil case in China.
Mr Zhao specialises in recovering trademarks stolen by hijackers through negotiation, administrative and judicial proceedings, and has rich experience in dealing with trademark prosecution and portfolio management matters. He also represents clients in IP licensing and transactions to advance major business deals and public listings.
Mr Zhao is a mentor at the Faculty of Literature of Law and secretary of the Pan-Entertainment Culture Industry Committee of the Communication University of China.
