Senior Partner at Kasznar Leonardos
Rafael Lacaz Amaral is a senior partner at Kasznar Leonardos. He litigates IP matters before the state and federal courts, and provides consultation services in relation to licensing agreements, patents, trademarks, copyright, unfair competition and trademark prosecution, as well as arbitration and mediation in the IP field.
Mr Lacaz Amaral is the coordinator of the firm’s anti-piracy and compliance team, with special focus on the software and entertainment industries (music, video and pictures), helping clients to recover unpaid royalties and to sell licences.
Mr Lacaz Amaral chaired INTA’s Non-traditional Trademarks Latin America and Caribbean Subcommittee for the 2010-2011 and 2012-2013 terms, and the Enforcement Committee of the Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property (ABPI) for the 2008-2009, 2010-2011 and 2012-2013 terms.
He has been an ABPI board member since 2008 and is a regular guest professor of IP law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and the Getúlio Vargas Foundation.
Mr Lacaz Amaral is an arbiter for domain name disputes at the ABPI Arbitration and Mediation Centre and a registered court expert in IP matters with the Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo state courts.
Admitted to the Brazilian Bar in 2000, Mr Lacaz Amaral has a law degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2000), a postgraduate degree in intellectual property from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (2002) and a postgraduate degree in civil procedural law from Candido Mendes University (2009). He speaks Portuguese, English and French.
