Özlem Futman is a qualified IP litigator, Turkish trademark and patent attorney and European patent attorney who has over 20 years’ experience practising IP law in Turkey. She handled the IP portfolio of one of the largest companies in Turkey as an in-house counsel before switching to private practice with a reputable IP firm. She founded OFO VENTURA in 2002.
Ms Futman has broad experience in effectively managing IP portfolios for some of the most recognisable national and international companies operating in Turkey. She applies her considerable experience, tenacity and creativity to the handling of complex matters such as oppositions, dilution claims, domain name issues, copyright matters, licence agreements, customs seizures and anti-counterfeiting matters, as well as non-use and nullification matters. Her clients span all industries, including cosmetics, fashion, food, entertainment, publishing, online games and certification companies. She has also handled IP matters for celebrities, designers and art institutions.
Ms Futman is an officially appointed expert before the IP courts in Istanbul and a sworn English translator.
As a leading expert in geographical indications (GIs), Ms Futman is a member of the GI committees of both MARQUES and the European Communities Trademark Association; she has also spoken and written extensively on the topic. She is an active member of the Regulatory Committee of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, Turkey. Throughout her career, she has participated in many other committees and organisations and is a member of INTA, the Pharmaceutical Trademarks Group, the German Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property and the Turkish Patent and Trademark Agents Association.
Ms Futman has been called on to speak at numerous conferences and events, and writes extensively on developments in Turkey and abroad in the most popular IP blog in Turkey.
Ms Futman graduated from the Istanbul University Law Faculty in 1993 and completed her masters’ at the University of New Hampshire in 2005 in IP, commerce and technology law.
She regularly writes on IP-related topics for international and local publications. Her most recent contributions are:
