Mitsuko (Mimi) Miyagawa graduated with an LLB from the University of Tokyo in 1984 and was admitted to the bar in Japan two years later. In 1993, she obtained an LLM from Harvard Law School and was admitted to the bar in New York the following year. She has over 30 years’ experience handling IP matters, namely trademark, design, copyright, unfair competition and trade secrets, and has represented clients in infringement litigation as well as IP-related business negotiations. Ms Miyagawa is a renowned specialist in the field of brand protection and has been ranked as one of the best IP lawyers in Japan. She has also actively worked as a member of several committees related to IP rights organised by the Japanese government, such as the IP Strategy Headquarters established in the cabinet and currently serves as a member of the Customs Dissatisfaction Review Committee and its IP subcommittee in the Ministry of Finance. Ms Miyagawa is also a lecturer on IP law at Keio Law School. Her position as the audit and supervisory board member of Panasonic Corporation is evidence of her excellent qualifications as a corporate lawyer.
Ms Miyagawa has written for Chambers & Partners and has published work in the second edition of The Legal 500 IP Country Comparative Guide. She has spoken at the Parody Trademark panel discussion at AIPPI World Congress in Milan and on online privacy, consumer protection and competition at ABA Asia Forum in Tokyo. In 2015, at the University of Washington School of Law’s High Technology Protection Summit, she was part of the Patent and Trade Secret Interface: Developments in the United States, Europe and Asia panel discussion. Ms Miyagawa has recently been made director of Japan Association of Arbitrators, as well as secretary general of the IP Centre of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations.
