Michael Widmer is an experienced attorney in the field of IP law. He represents domestic and international clients in the fields of trademarks, copyrights, unfair competition, domain names and designs as well as privacy and IT law.
Dr Widmer’s practice covers trademark clearance and filing strategies, prosecution and enforcement, including customs assistance procedures; he is also an experienced litigator. He has considerable experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts with an emphasis on intellectual property, such as licences, research and development contracts and distribution and collaboration agreements. Dr Widmer advises clients from various industries and sectors, including consumer electronics, information technology, real estate, healthcare and luxury goods.
He gained his law degree from the University of Basel and later wrote his PhD thesis at the University of Zurich (2003). Dr Widmer earned an LLM with an emphasis on IP and IT law from the University of Texas, Austin, in 2005. Before joining Probst Partner, he worked in international law firms in Zurich and Washington DC.
Dr Widmer is the author of several publications in the field of IP law. He has also contributed to a commentary concerning the Swiss Federal Civil Procedure Code and is a senior lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Zurich.
In addition, Dr Widmer is a member of the Swiss Institute for Intellectual Property Rights, the International Trademark Association, the Licensing Executives Society and the Zurich and Swiss Bar Associations.
