Partner at MMAKS Advocates
Mathias Ssekatawa is a partner of MMAKS Advocates and the head of the firm’s IP Team. As such, he oversees the day-to-day instructions to the firm’s trademark team. He has a wealth of experience in IP law with a specialisation in trademark filings and maintenance and IP litigation, in particular trademark infringement, passing off and anti-counterfeiting matters.
Mr Ssekatawa holds an LLM from the University of London and an LLB (Hons) from Makerere University in Uganda. He is a prominent member of a number of professional bodies, including INTA, where he was appointed onto the Anti-Counterfeiting Subcommittee and the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in London. He is also a member of the Uganda Law Society Intellectual Property Law Cluster and the Intellectual Property Registry User’s Committee. He chaired the Uganda Law Society committee set up to advise on the revision of the Trademarks Law in Uganda, leading to the New Trademarks Act 2010.He has acted as lead counsel in investigations, anti-counterfeiting, trademark infringement and passing off matters. Mr Ssekatawa is the firm’s contact partner to various foreign gateway trademark law firms.
He is also a prominent board member of Uganda’s National Examination Board. He is an external examiner at the Law Development Centre (Bar Course) in Uganda.
He is also chair of the committee set up by the Kingdom of Buganda to formulate policies on the Kingdom’s traditional knowledge and intellectual property.
