Head of Intellectual Property and Digital Business at CMS Albiñana & Suárez de Lezo
María González Gordon heads up the IP, industrial property and digital business department at CMS Albiñana & Suárez de Lezo. She specialises in advising domestic and international companies on intellectual property, industrial property, copyright and technology, particularly on litigation and dispute resolution.
Ms González Gordon has represented a number of blue-chip clients in high-profile proceedings, including the largest legal proceedings in the franchising sector to reach the Spanish Supreme Court and the first case to reach the court arising from an interpretation problem regarding the drafting of an existing trademark coexistence agreement. In addition, she has coordinated a number of complex IP due diligence exercises for multi-million transactions.
Ms González Gordon is an authorised representative before the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). She plays an active role in CMS’ global IP practice group, which includes all of the firm’s offices worldwide.
She is actively involved with leading professional organisations as a member of the board of the Spanish group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (with a particular focus on the trademark practice). She is a member of two Q studies (2020) and the former president of a Q Study (2019). In addition, she is a selected member of INTA’s European Global Advisory Council and holds a number of other roles at INTA: appointed representative before the EUIPO Observatory (INTA’s delegate to the Intellectual Property in the Digital World Working Group); appointed person for the expert group on Anti-counterfeiting Committee (ACC) new tools; member of the Western Europe ACC; selected member for the Anti-counterfeiting Policy Task Force; European representative for the Special Task Force Policy on Free Trade Zones; leader of the EUIPO Observatory Task Force within the Western Europe ACC and selected member for its charity COVID-19 campaign for managing INTA’s aid in Spain.
At a domestic level, she is a member of the Spanish Association of Industrial Property Agents COAPI, the Spanish Entertainment Lawyers Association DENAE and a former member of the board of the Spanish IP Professionals Association ASEDA.
