Managing Partner at O Kayode & Co
Lara Kayode is the founder of IP boutique law firm O Kayode & Co based in Lagos, Nigeria. Her practice covers both corporate and commercial matters, with a particular emphasis on industrial property and IP law, and alternative dispute resolution with a special interest in mediation.
Ms Kayode attended Felixstowe College for Ladies, after which she studied law at the University of Buckingham, England, and Queen Mary University of London, where she obtained an LLM in IP law in 1994. She was admitted as a solicitor and barrister of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1992 when she also joined one of the leading IP law firms in Nigeria. Today she is recognised as one of Nigeria’s leading trademark practitioners.
O Kayode & Co manages trademark, patent and design portfolios for domestic and international clients. The firm offers advice and solutions for patent, trademark and design challenges in the Nigerian and African environment. The firm’s growing enforcement department has successfully handled counterfeiting cases defending world-famous brands belonging to the firm’s clients.
In the past few years, Ms Kayode has developed active and mutually beneficial relationships with associate firms in other African countries, enabling the firm to assist clients with IP challenges in countries of the African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation and the African Organisation of Intellectual Property, Kenya, South Africa, Cape Verde, Ghana and Sierra Leone, among others.
A mediator accredited by the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution since 2005, Ms Kayode is also a member of a number of associations, including the Section on Business Law of the Nigerian Bar Association, the Pharmaceutical Trademarks Group and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, where she is now the vice president of the Nigerian National Group. An active member of INTA, she was the first board member to be elected from Sub-Saharan Africa. She currently serves on the Nominations Committee.
She has authored numerous articles for global trademark journals such as The Trademark Lawyer, the INTA Bulletin and World IP Review.
