Kenichi Nakayama is head of trademarks and designs at SUGIMURA & Partners. He is a distinguished trademark, design and unfair competition law practitioner, representing both foreign and Japanese corporate clients in the procurement and enforcement of IP rights.
Mr Nakayama is an invaluable member of SUGIMURA and offers a wealth of practical knowledge and experience regarding Japanese and international trademark and design practice. His practice spans the entire spectrum of trademark and design protection, from filing and prosecution to enforcement, arbitration and litigation. He has represented companies in a range of industries, such as entertainment, electronics, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and apparel, in the filing and prosecution of trademark and design applications, opposition and cancellation actions before the Japan Patent Office. He also represents clients before the Tokyo District Court, the Intellectual Property High Court, the Japan Intellectual Property Arbitration Centre and the World Intellectual Property Organisation’s Arbitration and Mediation Centre for trademark and other IP matters, including domain name disputes. He has extensive experience assisting companies in the enforcement of their trademark rights against counterfeits.
Mr Nakayama has been named one of the world’s leading trademark professionals in Japan by the WTR 1000 for seven consecutive years, since 2011. He is also listed as a trademark expert in IP Stars, Chambers Global and Asia IP Experts.
Mr Nakayama holds an LLM from Tulane Law School with distinction.
Mr Nakayama is also a member of the American Bar Association, the International Trademark Association, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, the Japan Patent Attorneys Association (ex-chair of the Unfair Competition Law Committee), the Japan Trademark Association (board member), the Asian Patent Attorneys Association, the California State Bar, the New York Bar, the Tokyo Bar Association (registered foreign lawyer) and the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys.
Mr Nakayama is a listed arbitrator with the Japan Intellectual Property Arbitration Centre and a member of the Legal Advisory Board for IP Protection of Japan Customs.
