Joost Becker is a partner at Dirkzwager, specialising in IP, advertising and internet law. He is the head of the firm’s IP litigation team.
His practice includes litigation, enforcement and advice in the fields of European trademarks and designs, trade name law and domain names, copyright, unfair competition and trade secrets protection. Mr Becker focuses on ex parte infringement and summary proceedings, including injunctions, seizures, anti-counterfeiting and (inter)national protection measures for his clients. He also helps the firm’s clients to manage their trademark and design portfolios strategically, and has experience in both opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property and the EUIPO.
Mr Becker has extensive experience in reputation management as well, handling matters relating to misleading advertising, online reviews, comparative advertising, unfair trading practices and press publications.
Alongside his team, Mr Becker also acts for clients in contract matters, including licensing, settlement and co-existence agreements, distribution and merchandising, cooperation agreements, joint development and know-how agreements, and non-disclosure agreements.
Dirkzwager’s IP department works for a broad range of enterprises, varying from SMEs to multinationals, in a wide variety of sectors, including food and non-food, online sales, consumer and retail, fast-moving consumer goods, toys, transportation and automotive.
Mr Becker is a lecturer in IP enforcement at Groningen University, and author of a range of legal publications, specifically on trademark and design rights subjects. He is a member of the Dutch Association for IP Litigation Lawyers; an examiner at the Benelux Association for Trademark and Design Law (BMM); an editor of the BMM Bulletin; and a member of the Dutch Intellectual Property Association, Copyright Law Association and Advertising Law Association.
