John McKeown focuses on providing advocacy and advice concerning intellectual property and related matters, including protecting trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs, patents, confidential information and misleading advertising claims under the Competition Act. He is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a specialist in IP law (trademarks and copyright). Mr McKeown is chair of the Canadian Bar Association Trademarks Committee. Mr KcKeown is also the chair of the American Bar Association International Trademark Treaties and Laws Committee.
Some of Canada’s largest marketers have relied on Mr McKeown’s advice.
Mr McKeown supervises obtaining, protecting and licensing trademarks and hundreds of successful trademark applications have been obtained. He is involved in many opposition proceedings before the Trademarks Opposition Board and actions for infringement.
Mr McKeown is the author of two textbooks dealing with trademarks: Brand Management in Canadian Law (Carswell, currently in its 4th Edition, 2016) and Canadian Intellectual Property Law and Strategy: Trademarks, Copyright and Industrial Designs (Oxford, 1st Edition, 2010; LexisNexis 2013-2018 Editions).
Mr McKeown is also the author of Fox, Canadian Law of Copyright and Industrial Designs (3rd Edition, 2000; 4th Edition, 2003), the leading copyright textbook in Canada. The fourth edition has been released in a loose leaf format. Mr McKeown and the text have been referred to by both the Supreme Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal as an authoritative source.
