Joel Vertes is an IP partner in CMS’s Band 1-ranked IP team (the largest full-service IP team in the United Kingdom) with nearly 20 years' experience of handling major IP litigation, commercial exploitation of IP rights and management of global trademark portfolios. Legal directories have described Mr Vertes as "a powerhouse of skill and focus" and an "excellent, technical and very commercially savvy lawyer”.
As an experienced IP litigator, Mr Vertes focuses on trademarks, copyright, database rights and anti-piracy. He has worked on high-profile litigation matters at every level of the courts in the United Kingdom and Europe. As part of his trademark expertise, he advises clients on the management of global trademark portfolios, working alongside CMS's significant in-house trademark and patent attorney practice. Mr Vertes is also a technical specialist, with expertise in open source software, domain names and other internet-related issues.
Mr Vertes also leads CMS’s franchising group – an international, multi-disciplinary team of practitioners advising clients on complex international deals exploiting IP rights overseas.
Mr Vertes studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and later obtained a postgraduate diploma in commercial intellectual property before joining Olswang.
In May 2017 Olswang merged with CMS and Nabarro to create the sixth biggest law firm worldwide – a true powerhouse in the legal world, combining deep sector knowledge with global reach. CMS's IP team is a unique ‘one-stop shop’ for intellectual property: its trademark and patent filing practice sits alongside commercial and litigation lawyers, which means the team can help clients protect, exploit and enforce clients' rights both in the United Kingdom and internationally.
