Jack Su is a partner at Wanhuida Intellectual Property and a member of the firm’s management committee. He is the managing partner of the firm’s Shanghai Office and a licensed attorney at law. He is affiliated to the Intellectual Property Committee of the All China Lawyers Association and the Advisory Board of the Shanghai Trademark Association.
Mr Su’s practice focuses on litigation and arbitration matters pertinent to intellectual property and unfair competition disputes.
Over his 20-year practice, Mr Su has advised many Chinese business magnates and multinational corporations on their IP-related contractual disputes, disputes over rights ownership, infringement disputes, and unfair competition litigation and arbitration, among other issues.
He has been instrumental in winning some landmark decisions. As lead counsel representing 3M, he obtained Rmb3.5 million in damages against a Chinese infringer, far exceeding the statutory limit set in the then Trademark Law. The decision was upheld by the court of second instance, as well as by the Chinese Supreme People’s Court, which selected the case among its annual 50 exemplary cases. Mr Su also led a litigation team that obtained a favourable court decision in opposition review administrative proceedings for China Spider King Group. This case was included in the Supreme People’s Court’s Gazette due to its significance in clarifying the difference between the extension of goodwill and that of a trademark.
Mr Su co-authors Trademark Strategic Management (Intellectual Property Publishing House) and co-edits Trademark Practice Guideline (China Legal Publishing House).
Mr Su was among the Legal 500’s Recommended IP Lawyers (Asia Pacific) for 2015 and 2017.
In 2019 Mr Su was hired by the Shanghai University Law School as an adjunct professor, providing off-campus tutoring to its LLM candidates.
