Founding Partner at MORAN IP
Hugo Moran R is the founding partner of the boutique law firm MORAN IP. Mr Moran has over 20 years of IP law experience and specialises in brand protection and anti-counterfeiting in Panama and Latin America, including the Caribbean. He has a clear understanding of IP legislations and the judicial system, and a deep knowledge of the precedents of the Panamanian IP courts and trends in illicit trade. His vast experience also spans the design and implementation of brand protection and anti-counterfeiting strategies for brand owners for the Panama and Latin American markets.
Mr Moran is a member of the Panama Bar Association and the Alliance against Counterfeit, Contraband and Illicit Trade of the Panama Chamber of Commerce and Industries. In June 2019 he was appointed Secretary of Crime Stoppers Panama. He is the publisher of The Panama Anti-Counterfeiting Report, a yearly publication that lists every customs seizure in the Panamanian ports.
Mr Moran helps shape the IP legal framework in Panama, having been involved in legislative initiatives regarding anti-counterfeiting and intellectual property. In 2018 he provided support to the private sector during the negotiations of the IP chapter of the commercial treaty between Panama and China. In 2019 he was part of the group that drafted new legislation to establish measures to control the illicit trade of tobacco and pharmaceutical goods in free trade zones – the first such best-practice regulation in the world. He was recently invited by the Panama Customs Authority to participate in the discussion table that sought to amend Panama’s customs measure regulation.
Mr Moran speaks Spanish and English.
