Partner at Shanghai Pacific Legal
With around 20 years’ experience, Frank Liu is a senior IP lawyer who heads the IP practice of Shanghai Pacific Legal. He is skilled in successfully handling challenging IP litigation matters of all types. He also designs comprehensive IP strategies and deals with related cases. He has handled more than 100 civil lawsuits and is frequently praised for his excellent trial skills. Before entering private practice, he spent five years working as a court judge.
He is entrusted by many leading Chinese and international corporations to provide advice on their trademark, patent, domain name, copyright, unfair competition and licensing matters. Although obtaining substantial compensation for IP infringement is challenging in China, Mr Liu has helped secure millions of US dollars in compensation in both trademark and patent infringement cases. During his career, Mr Liu has won numerous high-profile cases. For instance, the Supreme Court upheld his Fortune 500 client’s claims in a trademark infringement and unfair competition case, which was recognised by China Business Law Journal as “IP deal of the year” in 2013. A utility model infringement case was successfully settled when the defendants agreed to pay $1.5 million in compensation, and successfully secure a judgment by a Chinese court to confirm and enforce a $1.7 million of the American Arbitration Association arbitral award.
In 2020, Mr Liu was recognised by WTR 1000 as a Leading Trademark Professional, by ALB China as one of the China Top 15 IP Lawyers, and by Asia IP as one of the China IP Experts. He was also listed as a leading lawyer in dispute resolution, litigation and intellectual property in China by Asialaw Leading Lawyers from 2013 to 2018; was recognised by China Business Law Journal to be among China’s Top 100 Lawyers from 2016 to 2019; was selected as one of the world’s leading trademark lawyers by Who’s Who Legal in 2017, 2018 and 2020; and selected as a leading lawyer in the practice of intellectual property by China Law and Practice 2014.
