Partner at Barker Brettell LLP
Catherine Wiseman joined the trademark department of Barker Brettell in 1996. She became a partner in 2001 and now heads the firm’s trademark practice and is a CITMA Council member. She regularly attends INTA and MARQUES conferences.
Ms Wiseman has extensive expertise advising clients in a wide range of trademark matters. She is particularly experienced with regard to the freedom to use and the registrability of trademarks, as well as filing and prosecuting trademark applications around the world – in particular, UK, EU and international applications. She is well versed in conflict matters and in the negotiation of settlements.
Ms Wiseman acts for a wide range of domestic and overseas clients, including large national and multinational companies, and is recognised for her ability to tailor her advice to meet the specific needs of each client.
She has dealt with all types of trademark issues, including searching, filing and prosecuting applications; portfolio reviews and management; assignment and licensing programmes; hearings at the UK Intellectual Property Office; and contentious matters such as infringement of trademark rights, counterfeiting, company name objections, oppositions, revocation and invalidity actions.
Ms Wiseman provides commercial and pragmatic advice, often acting as an integral part of the client’s in-house team. She has been named as one of the world’s leading trademark professionals in the WTR 1000 for several consecutive years, where she has been described as “convey[ing] commercially nuanced and pragmatic advice. She is unstuffy and happy to get on with things, while taking the time to explain the costs, timings and risk of any action”.
Ms Wiseman has also been named as an IP Star for numerous consecutive years in Managing Intellectual Property’s World IP Survey and in 2017-2020 was included in the list of the Top 250 Women in Intellectual Property.
She also won “Best in trade mark” at Euromoney Legal Media Group’s Europe Women in Business Law Awards 2019.
