Catherine Wiseman has extensive expertise advising clients in a wide range of trademark matters. She is particularly experienced with regard to the freedom to use and the registrability of trademarks, as well as filing and prosecuting trademark applications around the world – in particular, UK, EU and international applications. Ms Wiseman is well versed in conflict matters and in the negotiation of settlements.
Ms Wiseman acts for a wide range of domestic and overseas clients, including large national and multinational companies, and is recognised for her ability to tailor her advice to meet the specific needs of each client.
She has dealt with all types of trademark issue, including searching, filing and prosecuting applications; portfolio reviews and management; assignment and licensing programmes; hearings at the UK Intellectual Property Office; and contentious matters such as infringement of trademark rights, counterfeiting, company name objections, oppositions, revocation and invalidity actions.
Ms Wiseman provides commercial and pragmatic advice, often acting as an integral part of the client’s in-house team. She has been named as one of the world’s leading trademark professional in the WTR 1000 for the past three years, where she is described as “convey[ing] commercially nuanced and pragmatic advice. She is unstuffy and happy to get on with things, while taking the time to explain the costs, timings and risk of any action”.
Ms Wiseman has also been named as an IP Star for three consecutive years in Managing Intellectual Property’s World IP Survey and in 2017 was included in the list of the Top 250 Women in Intellectual Property.
In 1996 Ms Wiseman joined the trademark department of Barker Brettell. She became partner in 2001 and is responsible for a large team of attorneys and paralegals. She regularly attends International Trademark Association and MARQUES conferences.
