IP Practice Group Chair at Seyfarth Shaw LLP
Brian Michaelis is the chair of the firm’s national IP practice group and brings more than 30 years of experience deploying a wide range of IP protection mechanisms, including trademarks, patents, copyright, trade secrets and contracts to meet clients’ diverse objectives and imperatives.
Mr Michaelis works in a wide range of IP enforcement, procurement and transactional matters with leading companies in almost all the markets serviced by the firm. Clients range from early stage, emerging technology companies to global innovators. With nearly a decade of in-house engineering and legal experience with global companies in manufacturing and research and development, he has worked intimately in the development, branding and growth of technology products that he now works daily to protect. As an IP litigator, prosecutor and counsellor his substantial experience in the technology development space has attuned Mr Michaelis to the development process and the stages of undertaking protection of products in and subsequent to development. His broad IP experience enables him to use the right mechanisms at the right time to achieve good protections at an appropriate cost.
Mr Michaelis leads teams in the procurement and enforcement of IP rights, assembling the right mix of skills and resources to match firm resources to client needs. His trademark practice spans the landscape of prosecution, counselling and offensive and defensive litigation representations in venues including state and federal courts and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Mr Michaelis’ IP practice group solves information management challenges with an inventive mix of technology and process design. With the assistance of the firm’s Lean Solutions group, he helps create solutions that interface with SeyfarthLink to aid in information management.
