Amended IP legislation comes into force

The law amending Part 4 of Turkmenistan's Civil Code has entered into force. The new Part 4, entitled “Legislation on Intellectual Property”, outlines the legislative basics for all IP rights, including industrial designs, trademarks and commercial names. The new Part 4 also outlines the principles for IP licensing and assignment agreements.

Law on unfair competition currently being drafted

Turkmenistan is in the process of drafting a law on unfair competition in the field of industrial property. Under the draft law, causing confusion among consumers and engaging in comparative advertising, among others, will constitute acts of unfair competition. The draft is in line with the international regulations on unfair competition.

Deadline for renewal approaches as '.tm' domain space reopens

NIC.tm, a new registry for the country-code top-level domain for Turkmenistan, has reopened the '.tm' domain space. The domain space proved to be so popular that from 1998 new registrations were refused. NIC.tm is now reserving, until March 21 2003, the domain names of companies whose registrations have expired.
