The WTR 1000 focuses exclusively on trademark practice and has firmly established itself as the definitive 'go-to' resource for those seeking world-class legal trademark expertise
Bronze - Individuals: prosecution and strategy
Judging from superlative client feedback, Barker Brettell is fulfilling its promise of a premier strategic portfolio management service – and then some. Its strength lies in the quality and cohesiveness of its team, which puts shoulder to the wheel for top UK and overseas companies, with which it forges close partnerships. A new name in the WTR 1000 this year is Lisa King, a partner who “manages global trademark matters efficiently and effectively while ensuring minimum spend”. “On time-sensitive projects, Lisa always rises to the occasion and does a great job. She is a go-to for UK and EU trademark prosecution.” Making their return to the rankings, Catherine Wiseman and Lucy Walker also garner vocal praise. Head of the practice Wiseman is “a natural leader, with unmatched confidence and knowledge, and an authenticity and strength of character that make her an incredible asset”. She is also hailed for her “amazing business knowledge and ability to pre-empt problems”. “Lucy is extremely responsive and provides clear-cut, practical and strategic advice for registering marks and overcoming refusals – and dealing with the impact of Brexit.” Other returnees include Tracy Arch and Rosalyn Newsome, both of whom bring valuable sector-specific insight to the practice – Arch in food and drink and Newsome in cosmetics – as well as broad-based industry knowledge. Arch knows how to scale her approach for different clients, including start-ups; one for which she has recently been conducting business-aligned prosecution is Occupeye, which is developing new technology for ocular prostheses. Well deserving of a shout-out are up-and-coming trademark attorneys Stephen Lowry and Becky Knott, both of whom qualified in 2018. “Stephen has an obvious passion for trademarks and gives superb counsel whatever he is presented with”; while “Becky sets the bar in terms of drive, ambition, work ethic and follow-through”.
An experienced trademark practitioner and partner, Tracy Arch manages a team of trademark attorneys spanning the United Kingdom and Europe. She oversees the trademark portfolios of several large national and multinational clients, using a wealth of experience to advise them on all aspects of portfolio management and strategy, working proactively to help clients achieve their business objectives.
Over 20 years’ trademark experience and a demonstrable track record in finding solutions for businesses enable her to add value in many ways, ensuring robust protection and strategy around clients’ IP assets and optimising commercial returns on portfolios. Ms Arch practises in all areas of trademark work, including advising clients on the adoption of new marks, the prosecution of applications in the United Kingdom, the European Union and overseas, and on potential conflict matters. She also has significant experience in more strategic work, such as coordinating IP audits, managing trademark portfolios, developing global IP strategies, conducting due diligence, developing clearance programmes, undertaking re-branding and restructuring activities, policing and enforcing clients’ rights and negotiating agreements or settlements. She has significant success in handling matters before the UK Trademarks Registry, the EUIPO and WIPO, and over the past few years has been actively and successfully involved in a number of shape and trade dress matters. Clients readily recognise her ability to tackle tricky situations with foresight and a clear game plan.
