Recommended without hesitation for its “professional, responsive and wide-ranging service”, the “extremely approachable” Mathys & Squire has an unimpeachable record in protecting and enforcing the cornerstone brands of top UK and international companies. It has sustained close relationships with many of these over long periods of time – something it will also seek to do as a value-added partner for the many new clients it has onboarded recently, such as Gymshark. Margaret Arnott and Gary Johnston, co-head the practice. Praised to the rafters, Arnott is a 20-year partner at the firm with “profound knowledge of the trademarking process and the ability to lead negotiations effortlessly”. “She sets a benchmark for the IP legal world that is difficult to beat.” Johnston is a “good strategist and clear thinker who keeps his eye trained on commercial realities”. “He’s hugely knowledgeable, proactive and great fun to work with.” Arnott has a commercial solicitor background and is well placed for contentious combat – an important component of her sophisticated, broad-based trademark practice. Prosecution and anti-counterfeiting sage Johnston has a global sphere of influence: he undertakes challenging tasks for The Cotswolds Distilling Company and has enjoyed protection success in Europe and the United States, with filings pending in China too.
Margaret Arnott is a highly regarded trademark attorney and solicitor. She joined Mathys & Squire LLP in 1998 and has been a partner since 2000. She has over 25 years’ experience and an impressive track record representing a diverse range of clients, including household multinational corporations, in the development, management and worldwide protection of their trademark and design portfolios. Her clients include well-known companies in the automotive, oil and gas, food and beverage, clothing, e-commerce, charity and technology sectors.
Ms Arnott has extensive experience advising on brand name selection and clearance, trademark prosecution and a full range of contentious work, including oppositions, cancellation actions and Uniform Domain Name Sispute Resolution Policy proceedings.
Ms Arnott’s background as a commercial solicitor, as well as her higher courts litigation certificate in intellectual property, is invaluable in her conduct and settlement of contentious IP proceedings. She was a member of the team that secured one of the first pan-European trademark injunctions for infringement of an EU trademark and has successfully protected the interests of her clients in proceedings in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court and the High Court. She also routinely advises on the settlement of contentious proceedings and drafts any necessary agreements to ensure that her clients can overcome conflicts in a manner which is both commercially and legally acceptable.
Ms Arnott is an active member of INTA and the Anti-Counterfeiting Group. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Trademark Attorneys and is also recommended by The Legal 500 (2021 edition) and ranked as a Trademark Star in the latest edition of Managing Intellectual Property’s IP Stars directory.
