Though it perhaps has a stronger profile on the patent side, Mathys & Squire is also home to a “reliable and trustworthy” trademark practice. Despite the challenges of the past two years, the group remains on an upwards trajectory, increasing its trademark filings by 30% in the 2020/2021 financial year. It has a special affinity for the needs of start-ups and emerging businesses, shaping their trademark protection strategies and providing them with the keys to full brand exploitation. “The team at Mathys & Squire is extremely approachable and knowledgeable, and provides practical, pragmatic advice. They are diligent and cost effective, making a sometimes dry topic easy to understand and to manage. We feel assured that we can go to them with an issue and they’ll come back quickly with a reasonable solution.” Setting the standard is dual-qualified trademark attorney and solicitor Margaret Arnott, who has been with the firm since 1998. She has recently masterminded a large-scale filing programme for Spirit Energy; obtained a vital injunction on behalf of accountancy bodies the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and Chartered Accountants Ireland; and worked with trade union Unison to consolidate its portfolio and advise it on infringement issues. At her side is Manchester-based trademark attorney Gary Johnston, who adroitly handles anti-counterfeiting measures and appears in myriad opposition and appeal proceedings. For the last seven years, he has been assisting impact protection innovator Design Blue Ltd with the registration and maintenance of its many trademarks.
Margaret Arnott is a highly regarded trademark attorney and solicitor. She joined Mathys & Squire LLP in 1998 and has been a partner since 2000. She has over 25 years’ experience and an impressive track record representing a diverse range of clients, including household multinational corporations, in the development, management and worldwide protection of their trademark and design portfolios. Her clients include well-known companies in the automotive, oil and gas, food and beverage, clothing, e-commerce, charity and technology sectors.
Ms Arnott has extensive experience advising on brand name selection and clearance, trademark prosecution and a full range of contentious work, including oppositions, cancellation actions and uniform domain name dispute resolution policy proceedings.
Ms Arnott’s background as a commercial solicitor, as well as her higher courts litigation certificate in intellectual property, is invaluable in her conduct and settlement of contentious IP proceedings. She was a member of the team that secured one of the first pan-European trademark injunctions for infringement of an EU trademark and has successfully protected the interests of her clients in proceedings in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court and the High Court. She also routinely advises on the settlement of contentious proceedings and drafts any necessary agreements to ensure that her clients can overcome conflicts in a manner which is both commercially and legally acceptable.
Ms Arnott is an active member of INTA and the Anti-Counterfeiting Group. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Trademark Attorneys and is recommended in the recent editions of The Legal 500 and Managing Intellectual Property's IP STARS.
Mathys & Squire LLP is one of Europe’s premier IP firms, with more than 100 years’ experience in the protection and commercialisation of IP rights, leading the field with insight, innovation and quality.
