The WTR 1000 focuses exclusively on trademark practice and has firmly established itself as the definitive 'go-to' resource for those seeking world-class legal trademark expertise
Bronze - Individuals: enforcement and litigation
“At Deriş, you get a dedicated and creative team of experts who think outside the box and not only advise on legal subject matter, but also help clients to find the best route forward from a strategic point of view. To top it off, they reply quickly and are fun to work with too.” The storied outfit combines the strengths of its lawyers and trademark attorneys to handle hundreds of mandates each year on behalf of some of the world’s top luxury, entertainment and pharmaceutical players. Bringing robust leadership to the group, Emre Kerim Yardımcı and Serra Coral deftly traverse the contentious/non-contentious divide and are widely recognised for their percipient filing strategies and exceptional courtroom capabilities. Kerim Yardımcı attracts praise for his “excellent responsiveness and customer focus. He swiftly gets to grips with the essence of an issue and provides clear, hands-on, cost-effective advice”. Okan Çan has cemented his position as “one of the best litigators in the country. He is knowledgeable, practical and simply a fantastic attorney”. Can also has an impressive enforcement practice and pairs up with customs officials to rid the market of fake goods, particularly in the fields of perfumes and luxury goods. He frequently combines with WTR 1000 debutant Feride Utku, who oversees the anti-counterfeiting and anti-piracy unit. IP stalwart Mehmet Nazim Aydin Deriş is the firm’s talisman. He has seen and done it all in the trademark world, and generously shares his wisdom with colleagues and peers.
Feride Utku specialises in both prosecution and enforcement matters and has over 15 years of experience in these fields. She joined Deriş in 2008 and has worked with the trademark and litigation teams ever since. She became a partner of the firm in 2020 and currently heads the anti-counterfeiting and anti-piracy teams.
Her main focus areas are counterfeiting and complex enforcement matters involving trademark, design, unfair competition and copyright issues. She is also qualified in portfolio management, domain names, searching and clearance.
In addition to Turkey, Ms Utku also guides clients through Northern Cyprus prosecution and enforcement matters and provides counsel on disputes and transactions for this area.
Ms Utku has taken part in numerous anti-counterfeiting projects, forming strategies, organising and leading simultaneous raids for world-famous brands – especially in the fields of cosmetics and fragrances, apparel and accessories, jewellery and luxury. She also has extensive experience in handling anti-generic programmes, including clearance actions, monitoring and continuous clearance services.
She is skilled in understanding the business needs of her clients and helps them develop the best IP protection systems for Turkey and Northern Cyprus.
Ms Utku has an outstanding track record of winning IP disputes. Some of her notable recent cases are:
- receiving a well-known trademark decision concerning an international trademark threatened by claims of dilution;
- representing a worldwide-known automotive brand in a court action against generic claims, securing a positive outcome;
- representing well-known companies active in the film industry with regard to copyright issues and online takedown requests;
- handling and contributing to a landmark court decision regarding unfair competition and trademark protection published in INTA’s Annual Review;
- conducting due diligence investigations for IP portfolios;
- representing well-known brands in domain name cybersquatting disputes brought under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy before WIPO; and
- handling anti-counterfeiting/anti-piracy projects for trademark, design and copyright owners.
Ms Utku is a member of the INTA Trademark Enforcement Committee.

Deriş exclusively handles IP, IT and media-related cases, both contentious and non-contentious. The partnership has an agile and cost-conscious approach in pragmatically combining and coordinating tailored solutions to complex matters which consist of developing IP awareness and enforcement strategies, conducting investigations into counterfeits and evaluating their results, preparing and organising customs seizure of counterfeit goods, serving cease and desist letters to prevent infringing acts, conducting negotiations for settlement agreements, and instituting civil and criminal court actions.
Deriş also has a strong patent litigation and prosecution team made up of litigators and Turkish and European patent attorneys.
Besides its busy litigation practice, Deriş also implements alternative dispute resolution policies before or during litigation. In this respect, the team is in contact with the WIPO Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre and actively participates in arbitration and mediation training. Mr Yardımcı is a panellist and arbitrator before WIPO for Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy matters, while Mr Çan has been appointed as a chartered mediator, with another member of the firm, before the Ministry of Justice in Turkey.
Deriş provides services such as drafting, preparing, filing and prosecuting applications for industrial property rights in Turkey and through our first-rate worldwide collaborators.
Deriş’s patent, trademark and industrial design departments prosecute applications in other countries through the firm’s network of correspondents, as well as directly with international authorities such as WIPO. As Turkey is a party to international conventions such as the Madrid Protocol, the Hague Agreement, the Patent Cooperation Treaty and the European Patent Convention, Deriş files and prosecutes directly international trademark, design and patent applications under these conventions.
Deriş is structured in a way that enables the provision of a complete range of legal services with a proactive approach that reflect the value IP assets have for our clients. The team emphasise the importance of a personalised collaboration with their clients and believe in fostering close working relationships that result in long-term partnerships.
With this in mind, Deriş’s approach is holistic and aims to facilitate business decisions made by acting analytically and proactively to identify upfront potential sources of conflict, eliminate legal uncertainty and understand and assess each and every detail that might affect the parameters of protection and enforcement in order to avoid unnecessary litigation and ensure trouble-free and uninterrupted operation.
