Henry Goh dominates the agencies table as the only gold-tier firm in Malaysia. The most prominent IP agency is also perceived to be the biggest trademark filer in the country, with headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and an office in Singapore enabling direct filing in both countries as well as Brunei. Sau Yin Tham is the firm’s most senior registered trademark attorney; he draws upon nearly three decades of experience to ensure that the trademark department runs smoothly. Senior legal counsel Azlina Aisyah Khalid takes charge of the prosecution practice, while simultaneously providing pre-litigation advice and handling opposition matters. Clients can look to Eng Leong Lim to resolve contentious issues. Well-versed in Singapore trademark practice and trained by the Japan Patent Office, Lim was involved in filing the first copyright notification and geographical indication registration in the country.
Eng Leong Lim is a legally qualified and trained lawyer. After being called to the High Court of Malaya, he commenced legal practice in intellectual property with a leading law firm. In 2006, he joined Henry Goh as the firm’s in-house legal counsel.
In his dual role as a registered trademark agent and legal counsel, Mr Lim has expertise which includes devising and implementing trademark protection strategies as well as managing extensive trademark portfolios for myriad domestic and foreign clients from different industries. He is adept in trademark prosecution, administrative hearings and opposition proceedings. In tandem with external solicitors, he has coordinated successful enforcement and defence of clients’ IP rights at all levels of the Malaysian court system, including negotiations for amicable settlement and coexistence of rights.
In recognition of his excellent service, Mr Lim was promoted to the position of trademark manager in 2015. In this managerial role and as a business development strategist, he develops and implements corporate policies in order to ensure that the firm remains one of the leading IP agencies in the country. This position works in tandem with his legal counsel post as Mr Lim continues to share his knowledge in various forums such as in-house training for staff and seminars for the public. In addition, he is part of the Henry Goh newsletter editorial team and a frequent contributor to international IP publications.
He is also a qualified registered patent and industrial design agent as well as a registered geographical indication agent. Mr Lim was instrumental in the filing of the first copyright notification and geographical indication registration in Malaysia for the firm. He also has experience in Singapore trademark practice, having completed work experience at the firm’s office there.
Mr Lim is a member of the Malaysian Intellectual Property Association, the International Trademark Association and the Asian Patent Attorneys Association, and is an alumnus of the Japan Patent Office Intellectual Property Rights Training (class of 2012).

In today’s competitive markets, standing out from the crowd has never been more important. A trademark or service mark provides the key link between providers of goods or services and their customers. We dedicate a large specialist team to handling delicate matters related to trademark and service mark registration. Our services include pre-filing registrability advice, filing and prosecution, renewals, maintenance and advice on exploitation and enforcement. In addition, our specialist team is fully capable of undertaking high-end prosecution work, including hearings and oppositions before the registrar. Our expertise and rapport with the local trademark offices make us the ideal firm for trademark filings in Malaysia and Singapore. We can also file trademark and service mark registrations in any country worldwide through our network of foreign associates, as well as international applications via the Madrid Protocol.
Effective drafting, prosecution and exploitation of patents call for a sound aptitude for technology, in-depth knowledge of the applicable law and practice, and excellent communication skills. Our team of registered patent agents have the necessary technical, legal and linguistic prowess to secure and enhance the business value of patent protection for inventions in many diverse technologies. Our local knowledge, expertise and resources make us the natural choice for patent prosecution in Malaysia and Singapore.
Industrial designs have acquired much greater significance in recent times. As consumers increasingly take the technical functions of goods for granted, design often becomes the decisive factor in a purchase. We routinely assist clients in securing industrial design registrations both at home and abroad. Such a practice demands a sound understanding of both international and local laws covering industrial designs. We can assist clients with the necessary actions in the event that their registered industrial designs are infringed by third parties.
In addition to trademark, patent and industrial design services, we offer other IP-related services, including copyright advisory and enforcement work, product registration and plant variety protection. These value-added services not only assist our clients, but also allow us to provide a comprehensive, one-stop IP centre for business and commercial needs.
With regard to copyright, Malaysia now offers copyright owners an option to deposit their work via a voluntary notification process. Our team is experienced in handling copyright issues in all fields of creative endeavour.
We can also conduct enforcement work. Henry Goh works closely with the authorities and collaborates with them by actively partaking in enforcement activities. This includes raiding business premises that have been identified as infringing clients’ IP rights. Our in-house counsel can provide comprehensive preliminary and pre-litigation advisory services to clients. Wherever possible, we seek to resolve disputes by negotiating with the other party or its representatives. This avenue benefits clients as it avoids the expense, delay and uncertainty of court action. In cases where legal action is unavoidable, litigation is handled by our external counsel, who are specialist IP litigators in their own right. We take an active role in the litigation process by liaising with our external counsel and clients to ensure a favourable outcome.
