António Corte-Real's Profile

António Corte-Real is a partner of Simões, Garcia, Corte-Real & Associados with 25 years’ experience in intellectual property. He holds a law degree from Lisbon University (1988) and a degree in EU law from the Catholic University of Lisbon. He has also been appointed as an official industrial property agent and is a European trademark and design attorney.

Mr Corte-Real is admitted by the Portuguese Law Society (1990) and his areas of specialisation are IP-related proceedings, trademarks, patents, designs, copyright and unfair competition and advertising law – including prosecution, litigation, enforcement and arbitration. He has advised national and international companies on contentious and pre-contentious issues and has litigation experience before the Portuguese IP Office, the EU Intellectual Property Office and the Portuguese courts, including the Intellectual Property Court, the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Justice.

Mr Corte-Real has worked as an arbitrator in several IP disputes involving trademarks, domain names and patents. He is an arbitrator on the list of IP experts of the Portuguese Arbitration Centre for Industrial Property, Domain Names and Company Names.

Mr Corte-Real is the author of a number of IP-related articles and a regular contributor to reports on behalf of the Portuguese group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI). He is also an active member of European Communities Trademark Association (ECTA) committees. He has spoken at IP-related conferences and courses – primarily for the postgraduate industrial law course at Lisbon University Law School.
