Firm Profile

HongFang Law (HFL) is a well-established Chinese law firm that provides quality services in relation to IP law and ancillary legal areas. The firm’s partners have longstanding experience in IP law, having started practising in this area in the 1990s; they share a common goal of wanting to craft the best tailor-made solutions for clients. This commitment to clients and stakeholders, together with the maintenance of a high standard of service quality, is at the heart of HFL’s practice. HFL spans several entities integrated with the law firm (mainly for litigation matters), including an IP consulting firm for contentious solutions and another IP consultancy for non-contentious matters, covering the Chinese nation area with resources from Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing.

We feel honoured that our clients recognise our ability to deliver workable solutions in even the most complicated cases by remaining loyal to us over the years. Our client portfolio includes both Fortune 500 enterprises, reputable SMEs and individual inventors, mainly in the following industry sectors: automotive, chemistry, communications and marketing, construction, food and beverages, petroleum and energy technologies, information technologies, materials and manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, software and e-commerce, sporting goods and web-based technologies.

Our main aim is to find legal solutions to IP problems; we assist clients with other legal issues associated with their IP issues. Our services are primarily linked to trademark acquisition (filing, opposition, invalidation); patent acquisition (application and maintenance); copyright registration; domain name acquisition; arbitration, customs recordation and prosecution; administrative and criminal prosecution; administrative and civil litigation; licensing and transaction support; legal risk assessment and advice; contracts; and advertisement.

Our strength lies in our well-integrated team of more than 60 professionals who have honed their skills and gained substantive and rich experience in intellectual property and related legal areas, in a wide range of industries, over a decade or longer. The team members have a great aptitude for understanding new legal trends and they are deeply involved in the dynamic IP regime development in China.

The firm’s core practices are litigation and administrative prosecution, as well as enforcement and investigation. We work closely with several public security bureaus all over mainland China; every year at least three of our cases are recognised as best cases of the year in China by the Quality Brands Protection Committee (QBPC) of the China Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment.

Our partners – Zhang Xu, Tiger Zhao, Irene Zeng, Nikita Xue, Eric Su and Kevin Xu – are leveraging their profound experience to support the firm and push us forward into the new variable IP landscape in China.

At HFL, we believe that the best legal solution for any of our clients’ IP issues involves devising an integrated brand strategy that takes into account the following statements: “Know what you have”, “Say what you want” and “Do what you can”. Moreover, aiming to respond properly to the rapid development of intellectual property and the Chinese legal environment is crucial; it is especially vital for brand owners to develop a comprehensive, proactive and protective legal and IP portfolio.

Our partners are proud to have received the following distinctions:

  • 2020-2021 QBPC Annual Top 10 Cases in IP protection – Criminal Case;
  • 2020-2021 QBPC Annual Top 10 Cases in IP protection – Non-Criminal Case; and
