Venezuela remains one of the most challenging jurisdictions to navigate from a brand protection and enforcement perspective, although glimmers of hope are on the horizon: in 2021, the Autonomous Service of Intellectual Property (SAPI) announced the direct application of the TRIPs Agreement, the Paris Convention and the Nice Agreement in Venezuela, ensuring that international IP standards are now applied in the country. SAPI has also established a new geographical indications department and introduced new procedures for the protection of geographical indications, which had been absent since Venezuela’s withdrawal from the Andean Community in 2006.
