Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has been making a push to improve prosecution processes and bring them further in line with international approaches. It has issued a draft to update its trademark examination manual, which, introduces multiple levels of distinctiveness and a fast-track procedure for trademark examination and renewal. These changes look set to boost trademark activity at the registry, while the increased volume of counterfeit goods entering Southeast Asia from China will increase enforcement activity in the country. Customs recordal systems function well in Thailand, which is one of few nations in the region that seizes an impactful volume of counterfeits.
