In Myanmar, political volatility following the military coup has shaken up every walk of life. The government administration is still limited and running in a haphazard fashion. On the IP front, much remains uncertain – cease and desist orders and raids are risky and almost unable to be carried out by the police and internet connection is often cut off by the military. On the bright side, the implementation of the country’s first trademark laws in 2019 and the soft opening of a national IP department aim to modernise every aspect of the trademark application process. As a response to the covid-19 pandemic, the newly launched electronic trademark registration system is working well and has helped a great deal to boost filing activity.
