Data shows that trademark filing growth globally slowed in 2021 to its lowest rate in at least a decade. By contrast with the worldwide picture, the Mexican market saw a high rate of growth, spurred by increased activity among domestic applicants, who are responsible for more than 85% of filings. Notable recent market developments in 2022 include the formation of an alliance between the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) and Mercado Libre, Latin America’s top e-commerce site, with the aim of enhancing protection for IP rights in digital commerce in Mexico through the use of technological tools for identifying infringing products; this comes after Amazon’s IP Accelerator programme became available in Mexico in 2021.
