Germany has long been a trademark hotspot in the European Union; but since Brexit, its significance has increased still further as rights holders seek alternatives to UK-based outfits for pan-European support. Many UK firms have established outposts on the continent – in particular, in Munich – albeit with varying degrees of success. The covid-19 pandemic meant that many ongoing contentious proceedings were delayed last year; but since the courts reopened, the country has been as busy a contentious forum as ever, with cases such as *Coty v Amazon* continuing to make the headlines. On the prosecution side, many companies worldwide used the unexpected downtime resulting from the pandemic to invest in reorganising their trademark portfolios, which kept German IP professionals busy and earning. Non-traditional trademarks continue to rise in prominence, with new 3D, colour and shape marks increasingly registered and disputed; and the trend of spin-outs hiving off from big-name law firms remains strong, as reflected by a number of new entries to the *WTR 1000* rankings this year.
