The Bulgarian market is showing signs of improvement as the changes brought about by the EU Trademark Directive, which came into effect at the end of 2019, gradually take hold. The Bulgarian Patent Office (BPO) is developing its services, and the country’s practitioners are working hard to educate brand owners on the value of solid IP protection. There are still a few issues on the enforcement front, owing to a lack of specialised IP courts and insufficient IP knowledge, but the expanding workload shows how important intellectual property is in Bulgaria. The market makes room for IP boutiques, full-service law firms and international heavyweights, the best of which feature in the WTR 1000 this year.
