The Dutch IP scene has remained relatively unchanged since the implementation of the EU Trademark Directive and local practitioners have welcomed the resulting stability. That said, there is clearly heightened awareness of the importance of brand protection among local players – which perhaps comes as no surprise given that the country regularly places in the upper echelons of the Global Innovation Index (GII). The report also reveals that the Netherlands is home to 77 of the world’s top 5,000 companies with the highest brand values, as per the GII’s new Global Brand Value indicator; household names include Philips, Heineken and ING. To top it off, Amsterdam-Rotterdam and Eindhoven have also been named as two of the world’s top 100 science and technology clusters. These positive results confirm that the Netherlands is a favourable jurisdiction for rights holders and trademark work is flowing in from all corners of the globe.
