Despite the challenges of the covid-19 pandemic, Luxembourg has continued to cement its position as a European IP hub: it is a hotspot for international players seeking to expand their presence on the continent or simply carve out a foothold in the local market. The innovative approach of the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property has proved invaluable in this regard – as most recently reflected by the introduction of i-DEPOT, a dynamic digital service that allows entrepreneurs to record their ideas online. This can be a useful first step in the innovation process – for example, in the phase preceding a trademark application or when seeking to prove the existence of an idea or concept. The system has already been embraced by SMEs and brand owners in the region and there has been a significant surge in trademark filings as a result, keeping local practitioners busy and optimism high.
