Notwithstanding the economic recession caused by the covid-19 pandemic, the number of trademark applications in Australia hit a new record of 88,723 in 2021, an increase of 9% compared to the figure in 2020. The unexpected increment could be attributed to the rebound in the number of international filers, possibly due to the relaxation of covid-related restrictions. Opportunistic entrepreneurship, driven by various growth-oriented businesses post-covid, also helped to stimulate the recovery. In terms of trademark classes, the two most significant areas of growth lie in household kitchen utensils and containers (Class 21) and telecommunications (Class 38). While demand for homeware and kitchenware was supported by many high-income households renovating their properties, social distancing and remote work have dramatically increased reliance on internet services such as virtual conferencing, video-on-demand, data sharing and email, and internet chatrooms as well as landline telephone and voicemail services. The Australian trademark scene seems to have developed a positive outlook, which represents a recovery from the difficult circumstances of the pandemic period.
