Some national trademark registers are unwitting hosts to a particular type of counterfeiting. Under the seemingly innocent pretext of being unaware of the existence of a trademark or a brand, applications are often submitted to trademark offices for marks that are identical or nearly identical to an earlier registered Community or international trademark, usually in the same classes.
