The Counterfeit Goods Act (37/1997) is specifically designed to combat the trade in counterfeit goods. The act came into force at the same time as amendments to the Merchandise Marks Act (17/1941), which was previously the main instrument used to deal with counterfeit goods. However, the 1997 amendments stripped out all provisions dealing with counterfeit goods, as such matters were henceforth dealt with by the Counterfeit Goods Act.
