Expanding the efficiency of Customs in the fight against counterfeiting

The estimated 1 million customs officers in the 177 member countries of the World Customs Organization (WCO) deal with an annual flow of more than 495 million maritime containers – around 16 a minute – and this number increases each year. To this can be added air, train and road traffic. Forty million tonnes of goods are transported by air annually; although air freight accounts for only 3% of the volume of goods being moved across borders, it leads to an increasing number of counterfeiting cases.
