Trademark practitioners in Turkey have been expressing mixed emotions about the changes ushered in by the Industrial Property Code, which was passed in January 2017; although the new set-up is more aligned with EU rules, there is a lot of ambiguity created by varying decisions issued in recently introduced non-use cancellation actions. As the lawyers come to grips with the complexities of the reforms and stay optimistic about the future of the practice, the political climate in the country remains tense. The state of emergency was lifted in the summer of 2018, but there remains much to be done to boost foreign investor confidence in Turkey.
