Walter Palmer obtained BA and MA degrees from the University of Miami, Florida, before obtaining a JD from the National Law Centre of the George Washington University. A member of the Florida Bar since 1995, he practised as a civil litigator in the United States for five years before moving to Brazil in 2000 to work as a foreign correspondent for a leading IP firm. Mr Palmer was admitted to the Brazilian Bar (Rio de Janeiro) in 2004 and in 2005, he and his wife, Cristina Pinheiro Palmer, opened Pinheiro Palmer Advogados, an IP boutique located in Rio de Janeiro.
Mr Palmer’s practice focuses on trademark clearance, prosecution and enforcement; unfair competition; domain names; copyright; litigation relating to intellectual property; and general counselling regarding IP issues.
Mr Palmer is active in the International Trademark Association (INTA), where he chaired the INTA Bulletin Committee for two years, as well as the American Intellectual Property Association, the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association and the Brazilian Industrial Property Agents’ Association.
Mr Palmer, who speaks English and Portuguese, is listed as a leading individual in Chambers Latin America, in which he was recognised as having a “keen sense of [clients’] business needs”.
Mr Palmer is a board member and past president of the American Society of Rio de Janeiro.
