Shannon Platt

Shannon Platt is a partner and the national head of the IP and technology team. She is also head of Sparke Helmore’s corporate and commercial group and a member of the firm’s executive committee.

Ms Platt won Lawyers Weekly Partner of the Year Awards and Women in Law Awards Partner of the Year in 2016; she was a finalist in both categories in 2017 and 2018, and in the first category also in 2019. She was awarded Patent Litigator of the Year (NSW) at Acquisition International’s 2016 IP Awards, and has been recognised as a leading IP lawyer by AsiaLaw.

Her team has been named Client Choice Awards 2019 – IP – Trademarks Category for Australia, 2018 Asia IP Awards – Copyright Firm of the Year for Australia, and Lawyers Monthly Legal Awards 2018 – Trademarks – Law Firm of the Year – Australia.

Ms Platt is admitted to practice in Australia, England and Wales, and practised in London for seven years. She has masters in intellectual property from the London School of Economics and from the University of Technology Sydney, and is a registered trademark attorney and notary public. Ms Platt is a member of:

  • INTA;
  • the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand;
  • the Institute of Patent and Trademark Attorneys;
  • the INTA Roundtables Committee; and
  • the INTA Anti-counterfeiting Committee.

She specialises in brand protection, IP litigation and IP commercialisation, and advises on the registrability of trademarks and designs, as well as on brand protection, technology licensing, trade promotions, advertising clearance, ICANN clearing house services and IP commercialisation. She manages a number of national and international trademark portfolios and acts in trademark opposition and non-use proceedings before the Trademarks Office.

Ms Platt also has over 20 years’ experience representing clients in infringement and revocation proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia for trademark, copyright, patent and design disputes, as well as litigation arising from misleading or deceptive conduct, breach of confidence and trade secret protection.
