Qiang Ma is a partner and the co-head of the IP practice of the prestigious firm JunHe LLP. He has a profound knowledge of trademark law, a wealth of experience in brand protection, and is well-reputed for effectively handling complex trademark matters. He is not only a resourceful practitioner and strategic thinker, but also a veteran litigator who is thoroughly familiar with Chinese courts at all levels.

Cases handled by Dr Ma have been specially ranked as annual Top 10 Cases and Typical and Guiding Cases by the Supreme Court, the Beijing Higher Court and the Shanghai Higher Court in 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2017, as well as being recognised for the 10 Best Practices by the Quality Brand Protection Committee in 2010, 2013 and 2016. A notable trademark-related case handled by Dr Ma involved BMW. It was chosen to be published in the Supreme Court Gazette as a model brand protection case. In this landmark case the Shanghai IP Court recognised the long-term well-known status of BMW marks and accordingly prohibited the actual use of three registered trademarks owned by infringers. Dr Ma has also assisted Tencent with administrative trademark cases in China for years.

Besides Dr Ma’s active law practice, he is also a scholar in the field of trademark law and has published numerous articles in professional law reviews and periodicals. He is one of the main authors of the China Intellectual Property Protection Manual and is also the main translator of Trademark Law: A Practical Anatomy. He is often invited to speak at events and present on Chinese IP law and practice by IP organisations, including the USPTO, INTA, AIPPI and IPO.

Dr Ma has been recognised as:

  • Highly Recommended IP Litigation Lawyer by Chambers & Partners Asia-Pacific in 2016 through 2019;
  • IP Star by Managing Intellectual Property in 2015 through 2019; and
  • WTR 1000 Recommended Litigation Lawyer in China by World Trademark Review in 2019.

Dr Ma became qualified to practise law in China in 1999 and is a member of the Chinese Bar Association. Currently, Dr Ma is also a member of the Publicity Rights Committee of INTA, as well as a member of the Trademark Law Committee of AIPPI China, and deputy director of Trademark Law Committee of Beijing Bar Association.
