Joseph T Simone

Director at SIPS

Joseph T Simone is the founder and a director of SIPS. Mr Simone has advised companies on the protection of their IP rights in China since the mid-1980s.

Mr Simone publishes frequently on IP topics in China and contributes regularly to position papers on legislative reforms issued by trade groups and professional associations. Most recently, his association and publishing work has focused mainly on online counterfeiting and bad-faith registration of trademarks in China.

Mr Simone has served on various committees of the International Trademark Association, including the China Subcommittee of the Anti-counterfeiting Committee and the China Task Force. He is serving on the TM5 Committee, which focuses on trademark office practices in China, Korea, Japan, the European Union and the United States.

In the late 1990s, Mr Simone was involved in the creation of the Quality Brands Protection Committee (QPBC) and the Global Leaders Alliance Against Counterfeiting (now merged into BASCAP). He served as vice chair of the QBPC for several years and remains active in its Legal Committee and Internet Task Force.

Mr Simone was a partner with Baker McKenzie in China from 2000 to 2012, and was an associate with the firm from 1988 to 1992. From 1992 to 2000, he was a partner with Johnson Stokes & Master (now Mayer Brown JSM).

As well as being a director of SIPS in Hong Kong, Mr Simone is also the legal representative of SIPS (Shanghai) Ltd. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Italian.
