AKD

With over 475 lawyers, tax advisers, civil law notaries and business support staff in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg (Benelux), AKD is a leading Benelux law firm. For our clients, we are the gateway from, to and in the Benelux.

Full-service approach

For over a century now, we have combined a full-service approach and a broad sector focus to consider any question from a range of angles and provide quality solutions anywhere in the world – from our own offices, of course, and also through our various country teams and our extensive, worldwide Friends Network.

Practising Dutch, Belgian and Luxembourg law, we have the size, expertise and experience to assist with national and international IP matters and to advise in large projects such as privacy and data security matters.

Doing business, winning cases

We help you do both. With committed, ambitious professionals who have no use for legalese but speak your language, we turn complex into coherent and give it to you straight. Rather than leaving your doubts linger, we resolve them. As you would expect from a trusted adviser.

Specialised team

AKD has one of the largest IP and IT teams in Benelux. AKD also boasts a dedicated trademark and design registration team whose sole aim is to look after your IP portfolio. Our lawyers enjoy an excellent reputation both nationally and internationally. They litigate complex infringement disputes before national courts and all the way up to the European Court of Justice.

Key members of the team are Huib Berendschot, Roderick Chalmers Hoynck van Papendrecht, Martin Hemmer, Paul van den Bulck, Peter Claassen, Bram Woltering, Sophie Hendriks, Jurriaan Dane, Andrine Like and Petra van Pul.

International reputation

The IP and IT practice group is very active internationally, maintaining strong links with INTA, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property and MARQUES – for example by taking part in working parties focusing on sharing knowledge.

The Legal 500 says:

AKD’s ‘insightful’ intellectual property team is made up of ‘creative thinkers’ with strong expertise in infringement litigation, as demonstrated by its representation of Zuru, Tenga, and Geneva Laboritories. The practice is also experienced in ‘advising in-house counsel on anti-counterfeiting and parallel imports issues’. Practice head Martin Hemmer is ‘particularly strong in privacy law issues’ and Huib Berendschot has a ‘keen business mind’. Roderick Chalmers Hoynck van Papendrecht, and Bram Woltering are also noted.

Roderick has a keen understanding of IP issues. He is able to explain issues very well.

Bram Woltering is an up-and-coming attorney with a good grasp of IP law.

Chambers and Partners says:

As an experienced litigator Roderick regularly litigates in infringement cases before courts and courts of appeal and in arbitration proceedings.

Clients

AKD represents many well-known international clients in a wide range of sectors, including automotive, electronics and information technology, food and beverages, household, personal care, pharmaceuticals, medical appliances, fashion and luxury goods.

Clients say that at AKD “the lawyers are extremely diligent. They are very proactive and very knowledgeable” and “the firm is able to see where the case is going to go, think a few steps ahead and try to take steps which would be best for that future path”.

Diversity and inclusion

We believe that everyone working at AKD will get the best out of themselves only if they are allowed to be themselves. That is why we are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to providing an open, diverse, safe and inclusive environment. AKD is a place where people, regardless of race, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status or sexual orientation, can thrive and reach their full potential. AKD has joined nearly 100 leading companies and 35 other law firms in subscribing to the Equal in Legal Diversity & Inclusion Statement.

Social responsibility

AKD believes that corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an integral part of modern business practice. We are involved in a number of CSR initiatives: Make-A-Wish, The Ocean Cleanup and Vereniging Natuurmonumenten, a nature conservation organisation. In addition, we work together with Pro Bono Connect, an initiative matching non-governmental organisations with the country’s top lawyers. Our lawyers, tax advisers and civil law notaries provide these organisations with free legal advice and assistance.
