Trademark renewal notice

Trademark owners with registrations in Burundi should be aware that trademarks registered before July 29 2009 must be renewed before July 29 2019 in order to remain valid.

The current IP legislation, the Burundi Industrial Property Law, came into force on July 28 2009. The law provides that all trademark registrations obtained after this date have a 10-year term which is indefinitely renewable. Before July 28 2009, trademarks were registered for an indefinite term. Although it was initially understood that these registrations would remain in force indefinitely, it has since been announced that older registrations will be renewable for 10-year periods with effect from July 28 2019.
